ESLP  Part 1

This online course introduces students to basic structures and vocabulary of the English language through the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students learn strategies in order to advance their reading, listening, and pronunciation skills.  They expand oral comprehensibility and write complete sentences, a standard paragraph, and short content-based essays. They utilize level-appropriate conventions of grammar and punctuation with a minimum of errors.

ESLP  Part 2

This online course is an extension of the skills learned previously as a Basic User. It focuses on syntax, continued vocabulary development, reading, listening comprehension, speaking and pronunciation skills, and writing multiple-paragraph compositions that demonstrate organization of ideas, use of a thesis statement, and supportive elements. Intensive grammar instruction that supports academic writing skills is emphasized. This course contributes to skills needed in mainstream classes and universities.

ESLP  Part 3

This online class is a continuation of basic communication in students’ new language, with further listening and speaking development.  The formal skills of writing, reading, vocabulary and grammar will progress, along the lines of everyday situations, interesting contexts, and a variety of material. Newly-arrived learners as well as those students who need more classroom focus can use this course to ncrease their participation in the English-speaking world and enjoy more success.

ESLP 0532 Advanced ESL Reading

This online course focuses on the development of advanced reading strategies that help the reader interact with texts and construct meaning. Through thematically based readings from periodicals, essays, short stories, folktales, and short novels (novellas), students develop advanced thinking skills: inference, interpretation, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, and application. Reading skills include vocabulary enrichment, identifying main ideas and supporting details, summarizing, and identifying a writer’s purpose and tone. A short research paper relevant to the readings is assigned.

ESLP 0120   Intermediate Conversation/Listening

In this online course students will become familiar with North American customs, popular idioms, phrases and expressions that are used in daily life.  Students are taught to develop competence in natural conversation through role-play and outside activities. Improvement in listening comprehension will be achieved through awareness-building drills and exercises.

ESLP 0220 Advanced Conversation/ Listening

This online course focuses on the spoken communication and active listening skills necessary for college level study.  Students practice a variety of listening skills including note taking, comprehension of main idea and detail, inference, and determining viewpoint, genre and/or tone.  Speaking topics are designed to allow students to apply the content, language, grammar, and style they have practiced in their texts and cassettes.  Speaking activities include interviews, debates, role play, and group presentations.

ESLP 0320 TOEFL Preparation

This online course deals with two aspects of standardized tests, preparation and test-taking strategies. Since the majority of international students plan to take the TOEFL for entrance to graduate and undergraduate programs, this will be the primary target, with examples, analyses, practice tests, timing, and computer- and internet-based sessions  This course will also be useful in developing standard academic skills essential for professional proficiency: reading comprehension, extensive vocabulary development, grammar, usage, writing skills.     1
